This is a new section of the Know Britain web site and like most things that are new this section is small. However, we shall continue to add to the list in an attempt to provide a useful service for our visitors.

No attempt has been made to classify the hymns according to the Christian denominations or comunities in which they originated. These hymns have been inspired, sung and often modified within a specific Christian comunity with its own form of spirituality and are, therefore, naturally rich in theology and religious sentiment and necessarily reflect the divers Christian traditions to which they belong.

I believe these hymns deserve to be the object of our meditation as they contain the fundamentals of our Christian faith and morals. Reading the texts and pausing over their meaning, will, I am sure, render our worship more meaningful.

Accordingly, some of these hymns are accompanied by an introductory meditation, which we hope you will find edifying. These hymns are marked with an asterisk (*).

I hope that no person will take offence by my including favourite hymns that might not correspond perfectly to his or her finer points of theology.
