The International Airport of Mexico City (AICM, Aeropuerto Internacional de la Ciudad de México) is 13 km (8 miles) east of Mexico City centre.  The official airport abbreviation is MEX, and the official name is the Benito Juarez International Airport.  The main Mexican airlines are Mexicana and Aeromexico.

On all international flights, just before the plane arrives at Mexico City Airport, the airline staff will provide passengers with two forms to complete a) the tourist card form and b) the customs form.  These should be completed before landing. When completing the form it is advisable to state that you will be staying in Mexico more days than actually planned in case of the need to prolong your visit. All tourists have the right to stay for up to 90 days. If there is a need to prolong the stay beyond the number of days specified on the form there is a fee to pay to have the permit extended, so it is advisable to leave yourself a margin. After landing travellers proceed to immigration with the completed forms.  Here the tourist card will be stamped and a section of the card will be given to the traveller. This must be kept and surrendered at the airport on the return journey. If it is lost there is a fine to pay. After immigration travellers proceed to claim their luggage and then to customs.

There is a small bus station at the airport with buses leaving for Cuernavaca, Pachuca, Puebla, Queretero, and Toluca.  The bus company you travel with will depend on your destination. For Cuernavaca, for example, the company is Pullman de Morelos (see below). The bus station is outside door 8, in area D. There is an office at the airport that sells bus tickets and reserves places on the bus.

European visitors to Mexico please note that if you wish to make phone calls with your mobile phone you will need a triband phone; a dual band mobile phone will not work.

If you need to phone but do not have a triband mobile phone then a valid alternative is to buy a tarjeta telefonica (phone card) for example tarjeta "Bueno" ("bueno" is the first word you use when you answer the phone in Mexico, the equivalent to "Hello" in England). There are cards to the value of 40 pesos ($) and 100 pesos ($).

Either purchase a taxi ticket from the authorised Taxis office in the airport or visit this page for Mexico City authorised taxis for tourism and airport transfers.

Taking an authorised taxi is a valid alternative for small groups.

The taxis are booked at the authorised taxi office in the airport.

The taxis the visitor to Mexico will see are tourist taxis that compare favourably with European standards. These are to be found outside area A of the airport. You buy a ticket at the taxi office in the airport which you then hand over to the taxi driver outside.

There are cheaper safe taxis that the airport staff use in their daily transport to and from the airport but the visitor will not see them unless he knows where to look. To reach them you need to take the overhead bridge in area D of the airport. At the taxi stand you will find the typical old Volkswagen Beetle taxis that have no front passenger seat. This taxi is suitable for 2 persons only.
