COCA-COLA FOOTBALL LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIP

Humble beginnings:

The humble beginnings of the Aston Villa and Birmingham City Football Clubs have similar origins. Both teams were founded by cricket enthusiasts and in both cases these sports enthusiasts came from the local church. Furthermore, both teams were formed in the same season.

In 1875 members of Trinity Church, Bordesley felt the need to bridge the gap between one cricket season and another and the creation of a football team seemed to be the answer. Their sports encounters and local cameraderie, centring on sport, could then span the whole year.

The club they founded was given the name Small Heath Alliance after the name of the district in which they played, Small Heath. The present football ground is located in this district.

Their first games were played on waste ground near Arthur Street. In 1877 the team moved to Muntz Street, this, too, in the district of Small Heath, and finally it moved to St. Andrews in 1906 where it has since remained.

The team entered division 2 in 1892 and played its first football league game 3 September, 1892 in Muntz Street, Small Heath. The team has had mixed fortunes moving from Football League Division 2 to division 1 and vice versa and was even relegated to division 3 for a period (1992-4). It was finally promoted to the FA Premier League in 2002.

It is widely thought that their failure to be promoted to the Premier League / Football League Division 1 was due to a gypsy jinx.
